How human names work

Most fantasy generators give humans whatever is left over. Namewright treats them as three distinct naming cultures, each grounded in genuine historical name-building, so a human name sounds like it belongs to a real place and has a meaning you can actually look up.

Heartland names follow the Old English and Germanic habit of joining two elements: a first element like wulf (wolf), ethel (noble) or sig (victory), and a second like -ric (ruler), -mund (protector) or -hild (battle). That is how real names such as Edmund and Wulfric were made, and it is why our results read as plausible, though most are new. Surnames come from places (Ashford, "ash-tree ford"), trades (Fletcher, arrow-maker) or fathers (Osricson).

Highland names draw on Old Irish and Welsh roots: bran (raven), gwen (white, blessed), seren (star), with endings like -wen (fair) and -gal (valour). Family names are patronymics: mac for a son, nic for a daughter.

Sunlands names use Latin roots and endings: stell (star) becomes Stella or Stellanus; noct (night) can become Noctifer, "night-bearer". Family names take the old Roman house form, agreeing with gender: Aurelius for a man, Aurelia for a woman.

Tips for choosing

  • Pick one culture per family or region and keep it. Mixing all three in one village reads as a melting-pot port, which can be exactly right for a trade city.
  • Two-element Heartland names shorten naturally into nicknames: Sigmund becomes Sig, Ethelwyn becomes Wyn.
  • Surnames tell the table something. A trade surname says common birth; a patronymic says close-knit clan; a Roman house name says old money.

They are built from real medieval name-elements with their genuine meanings, so some results (Edmund, Oswin) are historical names and most are plausible new ones in the same style.

Set the form to Feminine. Heartland feminine names use endings like -hild, -wyn and -burg; Highland uses -wen and -a; Sunlands uses -a, -ia and -ina.

Yes. Every name you generate is free to use in any game, story or product, with no credit required.
