How half-elf names work
A half-elf might carry an elvish name from one parent, a human name from the other, or something new. Namewright produces all three, and the third is the interesting one: an elvish root wearing a human ending, or a human root wearing an elvish one.
Take the Sylthae root sael (star) with the Old English ending -wyn (joy) and you get Saelwyn, "star-joy": a name an elf would find slightly rustic and a human would find slightly strange. That in-between feeling is the point.
Surnames split the same way: half the time a human place-name (Holbury, "hollow fort"), half the time an elvish family compound.
Tips for choosing
- Decide which parent named the character. It tells you which world they were meant for.
- A blended name is a story hook in itself: who chose it, and who disapproved?

Questions
What is a good half-elf name?
One that shows the character's divided roots. Look for results marked as blends, which mix an elvish root with a human ending.
Do half-elves use elf or human surnames?
Either. Here you will get both, depending on which side of the family the character grew up with.
